Ram was the son of a very learned Pandit . After the death of Pandit ji , Ram’s mother came to stay with her brother who was totally illiterate .  The brother made a living by faking as a Purohit and was a frequent liar . The brother lived in the kingdom of the Peshwas . The Peshwa respected learned people . He gave them grants and scholarships to students as he was interested in expansion of education under his rule .
A number of learned Pandits reached the Peshwa’s court one day to get grants . The visitors were received with respect .  Ram and his Mama were also among the visiting Pandits . Ram was unwilling to sit among the learned Pandits but his uncle repeatedly asked him to shut up .  Ram was adamant as he felt he was not literate enough and would not tell a lie . But he was scolded by his uncle who said ,” Who doesn’t speak lies . Not all the people assembled here are very learned either . ” Ram was still not convinced .
He was unwilling to accept a scholarship for which he knew he was not eligible . He was also unwilling to speak a lie just to get some money . 22 Finally the uncle said , ” It is going to be my turn to get a grant . I am not going to deprive myself of that . ” By that time the representatives of the Peshwa arrived there .
One of the representatives asked the assembled Pandits to come one by one and accept the grants . The first to come was Gangadhar .  He was introduced as one who taught jurisprudence . He was greeted and given the money in grant . Pandit Gangadhar accepted the grant and praised the Peshwa for his interest in spreading learning . Ram’s uncle was fourth in the row . As the representative saw him , he said , ” I do not recognize you . Where do you teach ? ”  The uncle lost his nerve . He became very nervous and faltered saying meaningless words . The Peshwa’s representative could make out that the man was a fake . He said ,
” It is so sad that people try to cheat and fake such to get educational grants . It is highly improper on your part to act like this .  I cannot give you an educational grant but since you have come all the way , I am giving you some money by way of charity . You may go
