Goswami Tulsidas Ka Jivan Parichay

Goswami Tulsidas was a luminary figure of the Bhakti movement in the medieval India and a prominent
saint of Lord Ram Bhakti cult of Vaishnavism in North India. He gave phenomenal contribution
to the Hindi literature by his thousands of hymns and religious lyrics soaked in the devotion and Bhakti fervour of Lord Rama. Goswami Tulsidas was born in 1497 AD but some scholars opined 1532 AD as his birth year at Rajapur, Chitrakuta in modern day Uttar Pradesh.

His father’s name was Atmaram Dubey while Hulsi was his mother. Tulsidas
was called ‘Rambola’ (Ram Speaker) as he miraculously uttered the word Rama at the time of his birth.

It was aclear indication of Tulsidas’ innate devotion and love to Lord Rama. Tulsidas received the knowledge of religion, culture and language from Narharidas, an eminent saint of that time.

On account of his wife Ratnavali’s taunt, Tulsidas dedicated his life to the worship of Lord Rama, renounce
ing all worldly affairs. Tulsidas is best remembered for his magnum opus ‘Ramcharitmanas’ depicting life of Lord Rama in a great devotional and pious way in the Vernacular Awadhi.

He presented the life of Lord Rama in the language of common people. Apart from Ramcharitmanas, Tulsidas penned thousands of hymns in worship and
bhakti of Lord Rama. He thus enriched Hindi literature a lot. He passed away in 1623 AD in Varanasi.
Tulsidas was contemporary of Mughal emperor Akbar. He also witnessed the rule of Jahangir as Mughal monarch. Tulsidas divided his Ramcharitmanas into seven
parts or Kands. Kavitavali, Vinayapatrika, Gitavali, Krishna Gitavali, Dohavali and Parvati Mangal are other literary creations by Goswami Tulsidas.
