Swami Vivekananda, born as Narendranath Datta on January 12, 1863, in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India, was a renowned Indian spiritual leader, philosopher, and social reformer. He played a significant role in the revival of Hinduism and the introduction of Indian philosophies and spirituality to the Western world.
Vivekananda was greatly influenced by his spiritual mentor, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, and became one of his foremost disciples. After Ramakrishna’s passing, Vivekananda carried forward his teachings and established the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, organizations dedicated to the propagation of Vedanta philosophy and social service.
In 1893, Vivekananda gained worldwide recognition when he represented Hinduism at the Parliament of the World’s Religions held in Chicago. His powerful speeches and eloquence captivated the audience, and he spoke about the universality of religion, the importance of tolerance, and the need for religious harmony. This historic event marked his introduction to the Western world and paved the way for his subsequent lectures and teachings in the United States and Europe.
Throughout his life, Swami Vivekananda emphasized the unity of all religions and the potential for spiritual growth within each individual.
