The story behind it
The vrat is named after Savitri, the legendary princess from the Mahabharata. She married Satyavan, knowing he was destined to die within a year. When Yama, the god of death, came for Satyavan, Savitri followed him and, through her wit and devotion, convinced Yama to return her husband’s life. That’s why Savitri became the symbol of a devoted wife — pativrata.
