India’s recent history at the Asian Games

India’s best-ever performance came at the 2023 Hangzhou Games (held in 2023 after a postponement), where the country won a record 107 medals (28 gold, 38 silver, 41 bronze) and finished 4th overall — the first time India crossed the 100-medal mark.

Previous tallies (selected recent editions):

  • 2018 Jakarta-Palembang: 70 medals (16 gold) – 8th
  • 2014 Incheon: 57 medals (11 gold)
  • 2010 Guangzhou: 65 medals (14 gold)

All-time (through 2023): India has won 183 gold, 238–239 silver, 357 bronze (around 778–779 total medals) and ranks 5th historically. India has participated in every edition since the inaugural 1951 Games in New Delhi (which it also hosted in 1982) and is one of only seven nations to have competed in all editions.

Key context for 2026

  • India is defending titles in men’s & women’s T20 cricket, men’s & women’s kabaddi, and men’s hockey.
  • Notable absentees include Neeraj Chopra (ankle injury) and no football teams (failed selection criteria).
  • Strong prospects remain in athletics, shooting, archery, wrestling, boxing, badminton (PV Sindhu and others), weightlifting (Mirabai Chanu), and team events.
  • Flagbearers: Manu Bhaker and Pawan Sehrawat.

The Games feature 43 sports and 469 medal events. India is aiming to build on (or match) the Hangzhou haul while competing with a slightly smaller contingent than in 2023.
