The Odia calendar follows traditional solar and lunar calculations. Its month boundaries and religious dates should not be assumed to match Gregorian month boundaries.
A good understanding of Kohinoor Calendar requires understanding the traditional terms used in it.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ତିଥି (Tithi) | Lunar day |
| ବାର (Bara) | Day of the week |
| ନକ୍ଷତ୍ର (Nakshatra) | Lunar constellation |
| ଯୋଗ (Yoga) | One of the Panchanga elements |
| କରଣ (Karana) | Half of a lunar tithi |
| ପକ୍ଷ (Paksha) | Bright or dark lunar fortnight |
| ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମା | Full moon |
| ଅମାବାସ୍ୟା | New moon |
| ସଂକ୍ରାନ୍ତି | Sun’s transition into another zodiac sign |
These elements are useful because Hindu religious observances are not always determined by the Gregorian date alone.
Understanding Tithi
A Tithi is a lunar day determined by the angular relationship between the Sun and Moon.
There are 30 Tithis in a traditional lunar month:
-
15 in Shukla Paksha (ଶୁକ୍ଳ ପକ୍ଷ).
-
15 in Krishna Paksha (କୃଷ୍ଣ ପକ୍ଷ).
For example:
-
Pratipada – ପ୍ରତିପଦା
-
Dwitiya – ଦ୍ୱିତୀୟା
-
Tritiya – ତୃତୀୟା
-
Chaturthi – ଚତୁର୍ଥୀ
-
Panchami – ପଞ୍ଚମୀ
-
Shashthi – ଷଷ୍ଠୀ
-
Saptami – ସପ୍ତମୀ
-
Ashtami – ଅଷ୍ଟମୀ
-
Navami – ନବମୀ
-
Dashami – ଦଶମୀ
-
Ekadashi – ଏକାଦଶୀ
-
Dwadashi – ଦ୍ୱାଦଶୀ
-
Trayodashi – ତ୍ରୟୋଦଶୀ
-
Chaturdashi – ଚତୁର୍ଦ୍ଦଶୀ
-
Purnima or Amavasya – ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମା ବା ଅମାବାସ୍ୟା
Many festivals and religious activities are observed according to a particular Tithi. A Tithi can begin or end at any time of the day, so the Gregorian date alone is not sufficient to determine every religious occasion.
