National Current Affairs:

  • The Lok Sabha passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriages) Bill 2017 making instant triple talaq illegal with up to three years in jail for the husband. Replying to a debate on the bill, Minister for Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad rejected the Opposition charge that the bill has been brought in haste. The Minister said the practice of triple talaq has been curbed and regulated even in many Islamic countries and a secular country like India will have to ensure justice to Muslim women. The bill will now be sent to the Rajya Sabha for adoption before it is forwarded to the President for signing it into a law.
  •  Good Governance Day was observed on December 25 to mark the birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Speaking at an event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, Good governance is the key to all-round development and it is time people shun the attitude of seeking personal gains while drawing up public schemes.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a new metro link between Noida and Delhi. He unveiled a plaque at Botanical Garden Metro Station, to mark the inauguration of a portion of the Magenta Line of the Delhi Metro, connecting Botanical Garden in Noida with Kalkaji Mandir in South Delhi. He also travelled briefly on the metro train, before arriving at the venue for the public meeting.
  • Minister for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Dr Jitendra Singh launched the electronic-Human Resource Management System (e-HRMS) in New Delhi on the occasion of Good Governance Day. The Minister launched the 25 applications of 5 modules of the system. The e-service book launched for DoPT during March this year will also be integrated into the e-HRMS.
  • Mr Vijay Rupani was sworn in as the 16th Chief Minister of Gujarat along with 19 Ministers, including Nitin Patel, Deputy Chief Minister, after the BJP’s victory in the recent Assembly elections. The ruling party won the elections for the sixth consecutive time.
  • Mr Jai Ram Thakur was sworn in as the 14th chief minister of Himachal Pradesh after the Bharatiya Janata Party wrested power in the assembly elections. He took oath along with 11 other ministers at a ceremony held at the Ridge ground in Shimla.
  • India successfully carried out an interceptor missile test, validating the reliability of its two layered Ballistic Missile Defence. The indigenously developed supersonic interceptor missile is capable of destroying any incoming enemy ballistic missile at low altitude. The interceptor was engaged against a Prithvi missile launched from Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha.
  • Government will open more AYUSH Universities and colleges across the country in coming years to promote integrated health care system. This was stated by AYUSH Minister Shripad Yesso Naik in Lok Sabha, while replying to supplementaries. Mr. Naik said, his ministry has approved 67 units of public health outreach activities under National AYUSH Mission to Kerala.
  • President Ramnath Kovind inaugurated the 100th Annual Conference of the Indian Economic Association at Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur of Andhra Pradesh. Indian Economic Association is a registered body of Indian economic professionals, established way back in 1917, with the objective of providing a forum for debate and discussion of policy-oriented issues.
  • 14 people died and 16 others injured after a major fire broke out at a building in Kamala Mills Compound in Lower Parel in Mumbai. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

International Current Affairs:

  • Indian prisoner Kulbhushan Jadhav met his wife and mother at the Pakistan Foreign Office in Islamabad. It was Jadhav’s first meeting with his family members since his arrest in March, 2016 on alleged charges of espionage. Pakistan Foreign Office released pictures of Jadhav talking to his wife and mother from behind a glass screen. The communication between them was through an intercom device.
  • India has slammed Palestine after its ambassador to Pakistan shared stage with Mumbai terror attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said in New Delhi that India will strongly take up matter strongly with the Palestinian ambassador in New Delhi and with the Palestinian authorities.
  • Israeli tanks and aircraft struck the Gaza Strip after three rockets were fired  f the Palestinian enclave towards Israel. As per international media reports thousands of Palestinians took to the streets of Gaza and the occupied West Bank to protest US President Donald Trump’s December 6 decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
  • In Egypt, at least ten people were killed and eight others injured in a terrorist attack on a church near the capital Cairo. A health ministry spokesman said the attack took place when gunmen on a motorbike opened fire outside Mar Mina church in Helwan area.

Business & Economy Current Affairs:

  • The Lok Sabha has passed the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Bill -2017. The bill prohibits certain persons from submitting a resolution plan in case of defaults. These include willful defaulters and promoters or management of the company having an outstanding non-performing debt for over a year. The Bill also has provisions to bar the sale of property of a defaulter to such persons during liquidation.
  • The Finance Ministry has cautioned people dealing in virtual currencies say in these are not legal tender and have no protection. Noting that there has been a phenomenal increase in recent times in the price of virtual currencies including Bitcoin in India and globally, the Ministry said the currencies do not have any intrinsic value and are not backed by any kind of assets.
  • Union Finance minister Arun Jaitley said despite the slowdown in 2016-17, as per the IMF, India was the fastest growing major economy in 2016 and second fastest growing major economy in 2017 in the world. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Mr Jaitley said the government has taken various initiatives to boost the growth of the economy which include fillip to manufacturing, concrete measures for transport and power sectors as well as other urban and rural, infrastructure and special package for textile industry.
  • The eighteenth Meeting of the Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) was held in New Delhi under the Chairmanship of the Union Minister of Finance Arun Jaitley as pre-Budget 2018-19 consultations with the financial sector regulators. The meeting was attended by RBI Governor, Finance Secretary and other top officers of the Finance Ministry along with the heads of SERI and IRDAL
  • The government said that investment in electronic manufacturing grew by 27 percent this year. The total volume of investment reached 1.57 lakh crore this year as compared to 1.43 lakh crore last year.

Sports Current Affairs:

  • Indian chess ace Viswanathan Anand won the World Rapid Chess Championship in Riyadh. Anand stunned World champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway and went on to bag the top position with ten and a Half Points at the end of the 15th and final round.
  • Indian boxers claimed three gold, a silver, and a bronze medal at the Galym Tharylgapov Boxing Tournament in Karaganda, Kazakhstan. In the event, the country’s Gold Medal winners were K Shyam Kumar in 49kg, Naman Tanwar in 91 kg and Satish Kumar in the +91 kg category claimed gold medals. To add to it the19-year-old Tanwar was also adjudged the best boxer of the tournament.
  • Ace Indian marksman Jitu Rai won the Men’s 50 metre pistol national title, setting a new record score of 233 at the 61st National Shooting Championships in Thiruvananthapuram. Rai’s score of 233 was a new record in the finals of the event Rai also won the team gold in the event combining with Jai Singh and Omprakash Mitherwal for a total of 1658, besting Team Air Force, who managed a total of 1626.
  • Two-time Olympic-medalist Sushil Kumar and five other male wrestlers qualified for next year’s Commonwealth Games to be held in Gold Coast, Australia.
