Celebrated during the Chaitra month, this ancient ritual is dedicated to Goddess Kali and Lord Shiva.
Devotees, known as Danduas, observe strict penance, fasting, and perform intense physical acts like walking on fire and piercing, expressing their devotion through pain and endurance.
The rhythmic beats of drums, the chanting of mantras, and the vibrant processions fill the streets of Berhampur, creating a divine and electrifying atmosphere.

Danda Nacha is not just a festival it’s a spiritual journey that showcases the deep rooted cultural and religious heritage of the region.

As the final beats of Danda Nacha fade, the community gathers to share prasad before the home of that day’s hosts. “Prabha” appears at the threshold, shouldering the sacred image of Maa Kali.
The worship rituals complete incense spent and chants echoing when in a single breath Mahakali descends into Prabha.

His limbs move with otherworldly grace, each step a blessing poured over the crowd.
Hearts tremble as the goddess dances through him, her fierce compassion lighting every face.
And just as swiftly as she came, her spirit slips away, leaving Prabha still and blessed.

With that, the single day’s Danda Nacha event draws to a close an unforgettable union of earth, devotion, and divine dance.
