Why Do We Celebrate Vijayadashami?
The significance of Vijayadashami goes back centuries. Two popular legends are tied to this historic day.

Lord Rama’s Victory Over Ravana
The most revered historic legend is Lord Rama defeating Ravana in Lanka to rescue Sita Mata, symbolising the triumph of dharma over adharma. This is why effigies of Ravana, Meghnath, and Kumbhkaran are burnt across North India to mark the historic win of right over wrong.

Durga’s Triumph Over Demon Mahishasura
In Bengal and parts of eastern India, Vijayadashami celebrates Goddess Durga’s victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. This is also the day when beautifully adorned idols of the goddess are immersed in rivers, marking the end of Durga Puja.

Both cultural legends highlight courage, righteousness, and the reassurance that evil, no matter how strong, will eventually fall and goodness will triumph.

Rituals and Traditions of Dussehra 2027
You’ll notice that the rituals change depending on where you are in India. Here are some of the most observed customs:

Ram Leela Plays: Theatrical enactments of the Ramayana are performed in almost every town and city across the country.

Effigy Burning: Giant effigies of Ravana, Kumbhkaran and Meghnad are often packed with fireworks, set ablaze in front of cheering crowds.

Ayudha Puja: In South India, tools, books, and vehicles are worshipped as part of a ritual called Ayudha Puja.

Sindoor Khela: In Bengal, married women celebrate by applying vermillion on each other, wishing for long, happy lives.

Shami Puja: In Maharashtra, exchanging leaves of the Shami tree is considered auspicious.

Every region adds its own flavour to Vijaydashmi, but the underlying emotion is the same: celebrating virtue and strength.
