1. Types of Claims
  • Cashless Claim: Take the bike to an insurer’s network/authorized garage. The insurer pays the approved repair amount directly to the garage. You pay only the compulsory deductible, depreciation (if applicable), and any non-covered items.
  • Reimbursement Claim: Repair at any garage (including non-network). Pay the full bill yourself, then submit original invoices/receipts for reimbursement.
  • Own Damage (OD): Covers damage to your own bike (accident, fire, natural calamity, etc.) under a comprehensive or standalone OD policy.
  • Third-Party Liability: Covers injury/death or property damage to others. Settled via Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) in injury/death cases.
  • Theft: Compensated at Insured Declared Value (IDV), subject to police verification.
2. Key IRDAI Timelines (Protection of Policyholders’ Interests Regulations)
Stage Timeline Notes
Intimate claim to insurer Immediately (ideally within 24–48 hours) Delay can lead to rejection if it affects investigation
Surveyor appointment Within 24–72 hours of intimation Mandatory for most claims
Survey report submission Within 15 days of appointment Penalty of ₹500/day possible for delay in some cases
Claim settlement / rejection Within 30 days of final survey report + complete documents Some insurers target 7 days after last document
Small claims (< ₹50,000) Often faster Registered surveyor not always mandatory; app/AI/photo-based assessment allowed
3. Standard Claim Process
  1. Ensure safety and note details (time, location, other vehicle details, witnesses, photos/videos of damage and scene).
  2. File an FIR if required (see below).
  3. Intimate the insurer immediately via app, website, helpline, WhatsApp, or SMS. Note the claim reference number.
  4. Submit the claim form + required documents (policy copy, RC, driving licence, photos, FIR if applicable, repair estimate).
  5. Surveyor inspects the bike (do not start major repairs before inspection/approval unless advised).
  6. Surveyor submits report → insurer approves/rejects or negotiates amount.
  7. Repair and settlement (cashless or reimbursement).
  8. For theft: Wait for police Non-Traceable / Final Investigation Report (usually 30–90 days) before final settlement at IDV.
4. When is FIR Mandatory?
  • Theft of the bike.
  • Accidents involving third-party injury, death, or significant property damage.
  • Hit-and-run or major accidents.
  • Not usually required for minor own-damage claims (small dents/scratches) with no third-party involvement.
5. Common Claim Rejection Reasons
  • Delay in intimation that prevents proper survey.
  • Driving under influence of alcohol/drugs.
  • Invalid or no driving licence at the time of incident.
  • False/misrepresented information in claim form or documents.
  • Vehicle used for commercial purpose on a private policy.
  • Wear & tear, mechanical breakdown, or consequential damage (e.g., engine seizure after water ingress in some cases).
  • Policy not active or expired on the date of loss.
  • Racing, illegal modifications, or other policy exclusions.
6. Other Important Rules
  • Compulsory Deductible: Usually ₹100–₹2,000 for two-wheelers (check your policy). You always pay this.
  • Depreciation: Applied on parts (higher on plastic/rubber/fibre unless you have Zero Depreciation / Bumper-to-Bumper add-on).
  • No Claim Bonus (NCB): Making a claim (except pure third-party) typically reduces or resets your NCB, increasing future premiums. For very small repairs, self-funding is often cheaper.
  • Total Loss / Constructive Total Loss: When repair cost exceeds ~75% of IDV. You may get cash-loss settlement (IDV minus salvage) and retain the wreck in some cases.
  • Do not repair before survey: Starting repairs without approval can lead to rejection or reduced payout.
  • Digital options: Many insurers support photo/video self-inspection and online document upload for faster processing.
7. Escalation if Claim is Delayed or Rejected
  1. Complain in writing to the insurer’s grievance cell (keep acknowledgement).
  2. If unresolved, register on the Bima Bharosa portal (bimabharosa.irdai.gov.in).
  3. Escalate further to the Insurance Ombudsman if needed.

Practical tips: Always intimate promptly, keep clear photos, use network garages for cashless ease, and verify your policy’s exact excess, add-ons, and exclusions. Rules can have minor insurer-specific variations, so check your policy document or contact the insurer’s claims team for your case.
