How to Study in Canada from India in 2026 – Complete Step-by-Step Guide
Thinking of Canada? The rules changed a lot after 2024. Here’s the real process.
Canada is still top 3 for Indian students, but SDS is closed, GIC is higher, and PAL is now mandatory for most UG/diploma students. Here is the exact flow that works in 2026.
Step 1: Get LOA from a DLI
You cannot apply without a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution. IRCC now verifies every LOA directly with the college. If your college doesn’t respond in time, your application is returned. Upload LOA only in the LOA-specific field in IRCC portal.
Step 2: Get your PAL/TAL
Provincial Attestation Letter is required for most undergrad, diploma and certificate applicants. Your DLI gives it after you pay the tuition deposit. Provinces have a cap, so it’s first-come-first-served.
Good news: From Jan 1, 2026, Master’s and PhD students in public DLIs are exempt from PAL/TAL and from the national cap. Processing for PhDs is now ∼2 weeks under the “Get your graduate degree in Canada” campaign.
Step 3: Proof of Funds – GIC is a must
You need to show:
1st year tuition paid + CAD $22,895 for living expenses + travel
This GIC amount was updated on Sept 1, 2025. Earlier it was CAD 10,000 then 20,635, now CAD 22,895 approx Rs 16 lakh. The GIC is refunded to you monthly after you land. Top providers: ICICI Bank Canada, SBI Canada, Scotiabank, CIBC.
Step 4: IRCC Application – Regular Stream
Student Direct Stream closed on Nov 8, 2024. All Indian students now apply via Regular Academic Stream. Apply online via IRCC Secure Account, pay study permit fee CAD $150 + biometrics CAD $85, then give biometrics at VFS in India.
Step 5: Documents for Indian students
Passport valid for full course, LOA, PAL (if needed), GIC receipt, IELTS/TOEFL/PTE score (6.0 for UG, 6.5 for PG), Class 10, 12, Bachelor transcripts, 2 LORs, SOP/Letter of Explanation, medical by IRCC panel physician, SOP explaining why Canada + why this course + intent to return.
Processing time for India in 2026 is 8-12 weeks. Apply 4 months before intake.

Eligibility:
Humanities UG: 65% in Class 12, Science/Commerce: 70-80% preferred. Master’s: 70-75% or 7.0 CGPA / 3.0 GPA.
