Tezpur

Tezpur

Tezpur, the fifth largest and oldest city of the state of Assam, is also called as the ‘Cultural Capital’ of Assam. Ruins dating back to the 4th Century can be found in this town. The city has very picturesque landscapes with snow clad Himalayan ranges all around and beautiful green tea gardens on the hill slopes, making Tezpur an all-time favourite with tourists.

The term Tezpur, in the district of Sonitpur means town of blood. The city acquired its name owing to a myth involving a fierce battle that was fought between Hari (Lord Krishna) and Hara (Lord Shiva in the form of Banasura, the king), and the entire city was drenched in human blood, hence the name. Tezpur has 73 tea gardens including the biggest tea garden in the world.
