Indian football’s history is usually split into three golden generations, and each has its own GOAT:
1. The foundation Gostha Pal (1913-1936)
Mohun Bagan legend, first footballer to get Padma Shri in 1962. Barefoot defender who captained India in the pre-independence era.
2. The Golden Age (1950s-60s) P.K. Banerjee & Chuni Goswami

3. The bridge I.M. Vijayan & Bhaichung Bhutia
- I.M. Vijayan: Three-time Indian Player of the Year (1993, 1997, 1999), often called technically the most gifted Indian ever.
- Bhaichung Bhutia the ‘Sikkimese Sniper’: 107 caps for India, first Indian to sign for a European club, first to 100 caps, AFC Hall of Fame 2014. His story from selling ginger on his family farm to national icon is still shared as a birthday tribute every year. He is celebrated as one of the greatest in Indian and Asian history.
And in goalkeeper debates, you’ll see a vocal lobby for Gurpreet Singh Sandhu fans still bring up his triple-save against Iran at Azadi Stadium in front of 80,000 fans as proof that “no Indian goalkeeper could have ever saved that”.
