Suvendu Adhikari Background and Early Career

Prime Minister of West Bengal

Suvendu Adhikari (born 15 December 1970) is a prominent Indian politician from West Bengal and the current Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. He also leads the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state.

Background and Early Career

  • Born in Contai (Karkuli), Purba Medinipur district.
  • Son of Sisir Adhikari (former Union Minister and MP); brothers include Dibyendu Adhikari (MP) and Soumendu Adhikari.
  • He holds an M.A. from Rabindra Bharati University and is unmarried.
  • Started in politics with the Indian National Congress, then joined Trinamool Congress (TMC) in 2000. He was a key TMC leader and minister under Mamata Banerjee until 2020.

He played a major role in the 2007 Nandigram anti-land acquisition movement against the Left Front government, which boosted Mamata Banerjee’s rise.

Political Journey

  • Early roles: Elected MLA from Contai South (Kanthi Dakshin) in 2006; MP from Tamluk (2009 & 2014).
  • In TMC government (2016–2020): Minister of Transport, and later Irrigation & Environment.
  • Switched to BJP in December 2020.
  • 2021 Assembly Elections: Defeated Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram by a narrow margin of ~1,956 votes. Became Leader of Opposition and BJP’s state unit leader.

Current Status (as of May 2026)

He is contesting the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections from two seats:

  • Nandigram (his stronghold).
  • Bhabanipur (against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee).

As counting is underway today (May 4, 2026), early trends show mixed leads: Mamata Banerjee leading in Bhabanipur (though margins are shifting and Suvendu has claimed strong performance), while BJP is leading in several areas including parts of Purba Medinipur. Suvendu has publicly claimed Hindu vote consolidation and a shift against TMC.

Key Positions

  • Strong advocate for CAA implementation, border security against illegal infiltration (especially from Bangladesh), and action against post-poll violence and chit fund scams.
  • Vocal critic of the TMC government on issues like corruption, law and order, and alleged appeasement.

He remains one of the most influential opposition figures in West Bengal politics, known for his organizational skills and strong base in Purba Medinipur.
